More Than a Residency: Our ArtPod Journey in Adelaide
When we first received the news that Threads of India had been selected for the SAFIA × City of Adelaide ArtPod Residency 2026, it felt like a significant milestone for our small business.
But what unfolded over the following weeks became much more than an exhibition.
It became a space for conversations, cultural exchange, creativity, and genuine human connection.
Bringing India's Textile Heritage to the Heart of Adelaide
Every Threads of India collection begins with artisans across India—families and communities who have preserved traditional textile techniques for generations.
The ArtPod gave us the opportunity to bring those stories to Adelaide in a way that goes far beyond an online store.
Inside the space, visitors could explore handcrafted garments, naturally dyed textiles, intricate block prints, and home décor while learning about the people, processes, and traditions behind every piece.
For many visitors, it was their first introduction to the craftsmanship that makes Indian handmade textiles so unique.
Conversations That Meant Everything
One of the most rewarding parts of the residency wasn't simply showcasing products—it was meeting the people who walked through our doors.
Over the course of the residency, we welcomed locals, interstate visitors, international tourists, families, students, artists, and curious passers-by.
Some stayed for just a few minutes. Others spent nearly an hour asking questions about block printing, natural fibres, artisan communities, sustainable fashion, and the stories behind each collection.
These conversations reminded us that people aren't simply looking to buy beautiful products—they want to understand where they come from, who made them, and why traditional craftsmanship still matters today.
Sharing the Joy of Block Printing
A highlight of the residency was hosting our hands-on Block Printing Workshops.
Watching participants create their own printed fabric using traditional wooden blocks was incredibly rewarding. Many had never experienced block printing before.
Children experimented with colours and patterns while adults carefully learned the techniques that artisans in India have practised for centuries.
The workshops quickly became one of the most memorable parts of our residency, creating moments of creativity, laughter, and shared learning.
By the end of each session, participants didn't just leave with a printed keepsake — they left with a deeper appreciation for the artistry, patience, and skill behind this centuries-old craft.
A Place to Connect Through Culture
Throughout the residency, we realised that Threads of India represents more than textiles.
It creates opportunities for people to connect through culture.
Visitors shared memories of travelling through India, discovering handmade markets, meeting artisans, and experiencing the country's rich traditions. Others were simply curious to learn something completely new.
Every conversation reinforced our belief that craftsmanship has the power to bring people together across cultures and generations.

Their support made this experience possible, and we are honoured to have been part of the 2026 residency program.
Looking Ahead
Although the residency has come to an end, this is only the beginning.
The experience has inspired us to create more opportunities for people to experience India's rich textile traditions through workshops, exhibitions, collaborations, and community events across Australia.
Threads of India will continue working with artisan communities to bring thoughtfully handcrafted textiles to homes and wardrobes while preserving the stories and skills that make each piece unique.
